El hombre ha creado cuatro posiciones espaciales las cuales ha llamado puntos cardinales.Esta característica le ha permitido al hombre crear un sistema para orientarse teniendo siempre como referencia al sol.
El oriente, llamado también este o levante es uno de los cuatro puntos cardinales principales.
Los cuatro puntos cardinales principales son: este, oeste, norte y sur.
La combinación de ellos nos entrega otras posiciones espaciales llamados puntos cardinales secundarios o colaterales.
Por lo anterior, el sol sale por el este y se oculta (se pone) por el oeste, también llamado poniente u occidente. El sol sube sobre nuestra cabeza y se aleja por nuestra espalda hasta desaparecer en el horizonte. El sol desaparece por el oeste, a nuestra espalda si seguimos mirando hacia el lado por donde lo vimos aparecer en la mañana.
Esto se produce porque la tierra está rotando en sentido desde el oeste hacia el este.
Si seguimos mirando de frente la salida del sol (miramos hacia el oriente, este o levante) y si trazamos una línea imaginaria para unir los puntos este y oeste y colocamos otra línea imaginaria perpendicular a la primera, encontrando que el punto o la dirección que señala hacia nuestra mano izquierda indica el norte (llamado también septentrional o boreal), y, por ende, la mano derecha señalará el sur (llamado también meridional o austral).
Los puntos cardinales secundarios o colaterales
Estos puntos son los intermedios entre los principales o una combinación de ellos.
Noreste: (NE) definido entre el norte y el este.
Noroeste: (NO) definido entre el norte y el oeste.
Sureste: (SE) definido entre el sur y el este; y
Suroeste: (SO) definido entre el sur y el oeste.
Recordemos:
Este (Oriente o Levante) es la dirección por donde sale el Sol.
Oeste (Occidente o Poniente) es la dirección por donde se pone el Sol.
Norte (Septentrional o Boreal) es la dirección hacia la izquierda respecto al este.
Sur (Meridional o austral) es la dirección opuesta al Norte.
Para encontrar en la imagen los números para apostar solo ubique su casa o área de trabajo o estudio en el punto cardinal donde se encuentra y desde ahí comience a combinar sus números de izquierda a derecha.

Sur (South or southern) is opposite to the north.
